Scriptural Basis for Health Ministry at Northlake:

Isaiah 53: 4-5 teaches us that our Lord not only bore our sins, but our sickness in His death on the cross. God is not only interested in our souls, but in our "whole person."

"Lord, by such things men live; and my spirit finds life in them too. You restored me to health and let me live." Is 38:16

"Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well." 3 John 1:2

"Preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick." Luke 9:2

Northlake's Health Ministry:

The Health Ministry is led by a Health Ministries Advisory Team and two Faith Community Nurses (FCNs).  The nurses are available to meet individually with you if you have health concerns or questions.  They do not do hands on health care but can talk to you regarding prevention, health concerns, medications, coordinating heath needs, and other health issues.

Both are Registered Nurses who have completed the Basic Parish Nurse (Faith Community Nurse) Course that is approved by the American Nurses’ Association and also participate in ongoing continuing education. They work carefully with and are accountable to the Health Ministry Advisory Team and the NLCC Elder Board.  Our Faith Community Nurses (FCN) are Brenda Guthrie and Nancy Hurley.

What our Health Ministry Team will do for the Congregation and Community:

  • General health and wellness education
  • Individual health and wellness counseling and prayer support.
  • Refer to community resources and highlight community health events.
  • Walk through health challenges with individuals and families
  • Coordinate with other NLCC ministries
  • Periodic screening (i.e. Blood Pressure)
  • Integrate faith and health
  • Focus on prevention and early intervention
  • Train volunteers
  • Keep a list of durable health equipment available in the congregation

What the Health Ministry Does Not Do:

  • Interfere or duplicate any existing health care agency services
  • Make diagnoses
  • Do invasive procedures or provide hands-on nursing care
  • Be on call 24 hours per day

Volunteer Opportunities:

We need volunteers to help with screenings, organize classes, advertisement, nursing home and home-bound  visitations, prayer support, and on the Health Advisory Team.

If you are in a related field of health, law, counseling, education, etc. or have had a special life experience and would like to help by offering your advice or by presenting or being part of a program, please contact us.

We also need to know if you have any durable medical  equipment (i.e. wheelchairs, walkers, bathtub rails, etc.) that might be available for loaning.   If you have equipment or know of good resources for equipment, please contact us.

Working Together

The NLCC Health Ministry is led by a Health Ministry Advisory Team.  In collaboration with the NLCC Pastors and Elders, 2 Faith Community Nurses, other professionals and lay workers in the congregation called by God to a ministry of service, rooted in Jesus Christ’s healing example, the Health Ministry is involved in a wide range of health-related
activities, such as:

  • Health and screening, lifestyles and health risk appraisals, answering questions about health issues. Helping people to understand the connections between faith and health.
  • Education to assist people to attain, maintain or regain health and wholeness: physically, mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually.
  • Advocate or “navigator”:  assisting congregation members in finding their way through health care systems and providing a liaison to community services.
  • Listening and confidential discussions regarding personal health problems and concerns for individuals and groups. Providing prayer and/or practical support.
  • Training and recruitment of volunteers for Health Ministries and coordinating the health services at NLCC
  • Helping those in need, i.e. homebound and Nursing Home visitation and support groups.
